about

Retrospectacles, Chris Brown (2003)

Written for my 50th birthday concert, this piece is concerned with echo, memory, and resonance. Its form is narrative and linear. Scored piano fragments and textures are extended via improvised interaction with their reflections in electronic signal processing. Piano string harmonics are contrasted with their tempered keyboard equivalents, resonated through modulators, pitch-shifters and delays. The live signal-processing is done entirely in software, allowing the music to shift quickly and variably through 56 different scenes. It was written in the then new programming language SuperCollider, which is also used in all but two of the pieces in this collection.
