about

Obelisk, Chris Brown (2016)

This improvisational piece uses rhythmic interactivity similar to Branches. The same generative rhythmic model applied within a single repeating cycle in that piece is here applied to whole phrases that can be of any length, where a phrase is simply defined by pauses in the player’s performance. The computer also analyzes the pitches received from MIDI output of the PianoBar, and their frequency of use within each phrase provides random weights for an algorithm that composes tonal responses with synthetic percussive voices. This recording was made while exploring the interactive component in the composition of a piece that eventually became a trio for piano, cello and oboe/English horn. Its score was eventually expanded to provide scales, motives, and harmonic progressions supporting five different tonal centers of a 12-note, 7-limit just intoned pitch-set. A recording of this completed version is in production for future release.
