about

Matrix, Chris Brown (2012)

Matrix is an improvisation using a SuperCollider live-sampling and signal-processing instrument I wrote called Console that models an audio matrix mixer. I have used Console over many years in both solo and ensemble pieces and improvisations. The matrix chart is a loose score of eight sections that maps specific piano techniques to different types of sampling and signal processing. I adjust details of their mix manually from the piano while playing using an iPad program. The numbers on the second line of each section of the chart show the number of recordings made during each section of the piece that are available for playback and processing. These are cumulative: in each section, recordings from each previous section can be played, so that a fragmented narrative of the whole piece is available at all times. This recording includes only the direct electronic output, without the unprocessed sound of the acoustic piano performance.
